1. Sun Ra - Abstract Eye: interesting, but quite short. Off a pretty good album in “The Magic City” I just started listening to this album recently. 

2. Simon & Garfunkel - The Boxer: A track I haven’t heard much, because I just got the album not too long ago. Sounds pretty damn good. Great vocals. I plan on checking out this album sometime next week now. 

3. Beastie Boys - Sure Shot: Awesome. I didn’t expect this track to shuffle in. Ill Communication is one of my top favorite albums. Classic example of what the Beastie Boys are about, that’s probably why it’s the opener. 

4. Madlib - Dolphy: 12 minutes of Jazz’s finest. I haven’t listened to a ton of Dolphy before (though according to Madlib, most of this isn’t actually Dolphy), but leave it to Madlib (one of my favorites) to pick out some good shit, reminding me in the process that I’m so far behind on my Jazz listenings.  

5. The Pharcyde - Little D: A weird skit about a 6 year old kid they got swearing and shit. With Fatlip yelling action every 20 seconds or so for no known reason. 

6. George Harrison - Ballad Of Sir Frankie Crisp (Let It Roll): Another song I’ve neglected a bit. sounds pretty fucking ace. Simple, but smooth. 

7. A Tribe Called Quest - Scenario: A goddamn classic, period. I was only one when this song was released, but I’ve somehow seen the video countless times. What a weird artifact. Reminds me of Real Player. Busta Rhymes had a pretty good verse as did Phife Dawg. 

8. Muddy Waters - I’ve Got My Mojo Working: I’ve been playing this song a lot recently too. I am not that deep in the blues (yet), and this is pretty easy and a fun listen. A favorite. 

9. Nine Inch Nails - 09 Ghosts I: Don’t have to go into too much detail background wise (obviously), good track though. 

10. The Flaming Lips - Halloween On The Barbary Coast: I haven’t gotten into early Flaming Lips as much as I’d like, but I did recently listen to this album (earlier this week). Pretty good coincidence here (Halloween). Damn good song, too. Wayne’s vocals are very accessible for all of you who hate his normal shrieking style and this is also before they left their Guitar rock era. 

11. The Flaming Lips - Shine On Sweet Jesus - Jesus Song No. 5: Well, apparently iTunes thinks one Flaming Lips song isn’t enough. I tend to agree. I am glad that this song is completely different than the last though. Still Guitar Rock, but Wayne is shrieking as bad as ever, which I consider a positive. Not my favorite off this album (In A Priest Driven Ambulance) however, That goes to “Rainin’ Babies” which I recommend. 

12. Mobb Deep - Q.U. — Hectic: Pretty average as far as songs go, but the lyrics are solid. I’m not going to listen to the whole thing though. 

13. Madlib - Shades of Pete (Super): A good example of what Madlib as a beat maker. Real bare loop with what sounds like a James Brown vocal sample howling in the back. 

14. The Roots - How I Got Over: Even though this is one of my favorite bands, I didn’t even want to think about listening to this until about a month ago. Rising Down was a big disappointment after Game Theory (one of my all-time favorite albums). However, I wish I would have bought this instead of Rising Down. It’s the closest they’ll ever get to Game Theory and a lot of people like it more. I don’t know yet, but I do like it and this is one of the better songs on the album. 

15. Nine Inch Nails - 18 Ghosts II: Man I wish iTunes shuffle wasn’t so shitty. I really like this one a lot, though. So maybe I’ll give them another pass. 

16. Arcade Fire - Windowsill: I remember when I was 17 and I didn’t even know how big Arcade Fire was (I was only into Hip-Hop and Soul basically until this album came out) and I tried it out because some guy said it was one of the best albums of the year. I thought it sucked ass, but I basically had no reference point and I don’t even think I made it to this track before I deleted the whole album. I liked The Suburbs, so I am trying to give this a legitimate shot now. I like this song, at least. 

17. Guided By Voices - Hardcore UFOs: Man this is a good record. My favorite off the album (Bee Thousand) is Queens of Cans and Jars though. That is a damn good song. 

18. Miles Davis - Yesternow: That bass, man, fucking good stuff. I find the last 15 minutes to be fucking amazing. 

19. Mastadon - Ghost of Karelia: A band I decided to check out because of their similarities to Baroness. I like the vocals on this track, I’m only dabbling in Metal so far; naturally this is the sound I prefer. The percussion is the highlight for me on this one, when it’s all said and done, great song. 

20. Radiohead - Bulletproof, I Wish I Was: I don’t consider myself a huge Radiohead fan. I like them alright (maybe that’s putting it a little too lightly). The Bends is an album I haven’t listened to thoroughly, but this sounds pretty ripe for a listening next week. 


This little shuffle project has shown me more than anything that I need to give a deeper listen to a lot of this stuff. The Bends, Crack In The Skye, & Bridge Over Troubled Water are all on the list for thorough listening parties for next week.
